The city of Flint is facing a significant public safety challenge. Crime and violence are increasing across the city, while the city's budget crisis has caused a simultaneous reduction in the police force and public safety resources. Mayor Dayne Walling is addressing the issue by reviving community policing and neighborhood foot patrols. The Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice will provide training, technical assistance, and evaluation of the Flint 21st Century Community Policing effort.

The city of Flint is facing a significant public safety challenge. Crime and violence are increasing across the city, while the city's budget crisis has caused a simultaneous reduction in the police force and public safety resources. Newly elected Mayor Dayne Walling is addressing the issue by reviving community policing and neighborhood foot patrols. The Flint 21st Century Community Policing effort will work in collaboration with the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice to operate in all nine wards of the city to reduce all categories of crime through community policing efforts.

This renewal grant will provide the Flint office of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation with multiyear funding to continue the work of transforming distressed neighborhoods into livable communities. With a focus on creating sustainable communities, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation provides local organizations with technical assistance and local policy support in addition to loans and grants. During the next three years, the organization will continue its efforts to implement the Flint River District Strategy, and enhance neighborhood and community partnerships in Flint.
