The institute has worked with communities affected by conflict, conducted research on transitional justice issues and reconciliation, supported peace building efforts, and used the experience of South Africa's peaceful transition to democracy to assist and advise other African countries in finding nonviolent solutions to their own conflicts. Major activities in the next period include tracking and analyzing reconciliation trends in post-conflict societies in South Africa and the region; providing policy advice and facilitating dialogues; implementing community engagement activities to advance post-conflict reconstruction and development; and developing educational resources.

The Institute for Healing of Memories was created to contribute to the healing of individuals and communities affected by the political conflict and violence during apartheid and to share South Africa's experience of dealing with its past with the broader international community. The institute's core program is its Healing of Memories workshops, which provide a safe space for dialogue and openness to deal with issues such as reconciliation, forgiveness, dealing with the past, restorative justice, peace building, and conflict resolution. Past achievements include working with youth to teach them about the past and reconciliation and conducting healing workshops for refugees, prisoners, and people infected by HIV/AIDS. This grant will assist the institute to continue with these activities and to strengthen its partnership and collaboration with various institutions that implement programs related to healing and reconciliation.
