This grant to the Flint Institute of Music will provide continued support for the annual Tapology Dance Festival for Youth held on the Flint Cultural Center campus. The festival is a collaborative effort with Tapology, Inc., to introduce children, ages 8 to 18, to the art of tap dance and offer instruction by professional artists to aspiring young dancers. An educational component to the festival offers 1,000 Flint public school students an opportunity to learn about the history of tap, receive instruction from performing artists, and gain an appreciation for the music and culture it represents. Dance studio students from throughout Michigan and other states attend workshops and receive mentoring from professional dancers from around the country. The festival culminates in a student dance competition and public performance by the professional dancers.
