This grant provides partial support for the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study, an ongoing research study to collect detailed data describing defining characteristics and the philanthropic behavior of American families. The study follows giving and volunteering habits of 8,000 households over time and over generations as families mature, face differing economic circumstances, and encounter changes in their family size, health, and other factors. It is conducted in conjunction with the Institute for Social Research Panel Study of Income Dynamics at the University of Michigan, which has surveyed families since 1968 and to which a philanthropy component was added in 2001. The data set produced by the study is the best, most accurate resource for measuring giving and volunteering in the United States and is used extensively by researchers. Founded in 1987, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis conducts research, offers academic programs, and provides philanthropic services.
