This grant will enable the Genesee Area Focus Fund to continue to develop and implement summer and year-round programs that provide education and employment opportunities for Flint area youth. The Summer Youth Initiative provides funding to area nonprofits and businesses to hire Genesee County teens, ages 14-18 and in grades 9-12, to work in their respective summer programs. The 2009 Summer Youth Initiative provided funding to 22 nonprofit agencies and three local businesses to employ 473 teenagers and 28 college-aged youth as supervisors during the summer of 2009. Another 101 teenagers were employed by 12 nonprofit agencies and 2 local businesses from September through December 2009. The goal for 2010 is to serve 500 teenagers during the summer in Genesee County.
