Steve Biko Foundation

Amount: $100,000
Grant Period: 3/1/2010 to 2/29/2012
Program: Civil Society
Program Area: South Africa
Geographic Focus: South Africa: South Africa (At Large)

Established in 1998, the Steve Biko Foundation seeks to nurture and develop community leadership, especially among the youth, as a means to promote civic participation in politics, the economy, and culture. It also promotes public dialogue on government policy, popular culture, and race relations through a series of lectures and seminars. The Steve Biko Foundation is inspired by the leadership legacy of Steven Bantu Biko, one of the founding figures of the black consciousness movement in South Africa who was murdered by the security police in September 1977. In the past two years, the grantee supported youth and entrepreneurship programs in the Eastern Cape province, most notably the Expressions of Identity program for youth, which uses art to address social challenges. The program has attracted a lot of interest and the grantee has requests for assistance to implement similar programs in various communities. This grant will continue to support the Steve Biko Foundation's efforts to nurture and affirm fundamental human values.
