Amount: $30,000
Grant Period: 7/1/2011 to 6/30/2012
Program: Civil Society

This grant supports the strengthening of a key institution in Croatia whose goals are to promote volunteerism and the development of the nonprofit sector, support community-based peace building, and improve ethnic relations. During the grant period, the Centre for Peace, Nonviolence and Human Rights Osijek will strengthen the quality of its core programs, including free legal aid, war crimes trial monitoring, mediation, and peace education. The center will also organize staff training and strategic planning exercises and will improve its project design, implementation, and monitoring systems. Over the past two years, the grantee's war crimes trials monitoring helped to shape the reform of the Croatian judiciary and increased national and international attention to the importance of war crimes trials in Croatia. The grantee also provided extensive free legal advice and representation and participated in a national network of legal assistance providers. The grantee is based in Osijek, a city in eastern Croatia.
