Founded in 1855, Michigan State University is one of the top research universities in the world. During the grant period, the grantee will begin the planning and implementation process of a Flint Public Health and Medical Campus, one of two flagship campuses for Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. In addition to Flint, the other flagship campus is the Secchia Center in Grand Rapids which opened in 2010. The Flint Campus will be designed to model a new way to think about doctors and their relationships to patients, their professions, and the communities where they live. This integration of medical training for family- and community-based doctors and public health could be a national model that will create healthier communities and a more cost-effective health system.
